I was constantly surprised by this book and it was so incredibly unique that I’m struggling to put into words my experience of reading it honestly. It was a really interesting story surrounding a reporter gradually gathering the life story of a convict, and in the process beginning to truly explore her own life and who she is alongside. The two stories were great alongside each other and there were so many unexpected twists and turns.

This book had some of the most gorgeous descriptions of food and eating that I have come across, even for the most basic of recipes and it genuinely made me want to try everything that was mentioned. Food is such a huge central topic in the book and is the focus of everything really.

Butter is an exploration of societal expectations in a very strict culture and the experience and implications of breaking these. It is a highly detailed character study of Kajii and Rika, and the extent people will go to when faced with loneliness, expectations, and revenge. A fab story, one that shouldn’t be missed out on (but make sure you’re stocked up on butter, rice, and soy sauce before you read it!).
