Black Panther, Vol. 1: A Nation Under Our Feet, Book 1 by Ta-Nehisi Coates
5.0
I was able to read the first issue of this series before I quit Marvel entirely a few years back. I'm so glad I got this TPB for Christmas so that I could get back into it. Coates is awesome at writing for Black Panther, and my favourite thing about this series is that T'Challa is not the only person we follow - Ramonda, the Dora Milaje, the villains, even Shuri, even Wakanda itself are all characters. Looking at this and Stelfreeze's art, it's clear that they were an inspiration for the upcoming movie.
I especially love the villains. Tetu and Zenzi are shown to be dangerous and in the wrong, but their motivations are easily understandable, especially in today's climate: everybody wants (even needs) a revolution. How they go about it, of course, is what makes them a hero or villain. That's where the Midnight Angels come in. Ayo and Aneka give a good middle ground of Wakandans who are trying to rebuild the country, but are doing so through attacking the guilty and the dangerous, rather than inciting fear the way The People do. The three factions - The People, the Midnight Angels, and the Court of Wakanda - all form good counterpoints to each other.
I can't wait to grab the next collection, and I can't wait to see the movie, and I'd love it if even more material from here reached the big screen.
