The Native Trees of Canada by Leanne Shapton

While reading, the paintings were nice and I enjoyed seeing species that I'm familiar with, but I felt like the book could've benefitted from more writing- e.g. details about each tree (where in Canada does each type grow?) and/or some kind of essay to accompany the book (since the book focuses on native trees, maybe something about the effect that introduced species have had on the trees listed in the book).
I didn't expect to have any lasting impression but it seems that I was wrong. My mind keeps wandering back to the trees. Since it's based on a book that's now over 60 years old, do all these trees still exist? What about 60 years from now? How many of these trees have I ever seen, and how many will I see before I die?

Though they're not directly related, I would highly recommend enjoying Native Trees of Canada alongside The Hylaeus Project by Lisa Schonberg and Aidan Koch.
