Rosewater by Tade Thompson
4.0
A gritty sci-fi novel from British author Tade Thompson. Outside of Lagos, a town has grown up around an alien structure known as the Dome. Kaaro is a psychic agent with a criminal past who was the last person to see inside the Dome.
Thompson's characters have the rich development of an author with a background in psychiatry. They are flawed and unlikable, yet I liked them anyway.
The mechanism that allows psychic abilities in this world was inventive, and the presence of the alien dome in the city was a tease that created a long, building tension.
I found it a little tricky to follow the jumps back and forth through time in the narrative flow of a novel, but the slow reveal of information was satisfying.
Karro knows a lot more about the aliens then you would think, but you don't understand this until the end.
