The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins

4.0

3.5 stars — the plot twists in this were jaw-dropping. I haven’t read Jane Eyre since high school, but I remembered enough about it. And honestly if you haven’t read JE, you can still read this, you just won’t recognize any of the Easter eggs!

The first half of this was slow, and I was also ANNOYED at Jane for being like “oh cool I barely know you LET’S GET MARRIED” like c’mon girl.

The shifting POVs of Jane and Bea, and then Eddie at the end were so good — I’m not a huge fan of shifting POVs but I felt like this was done so well and I never felt discombobulated or annoyed with the switch.

The end was wild. I can’t believe this Eddie thought that it would be fine to keep Bea/have her declared legally dead. NO BIG DEAL. And at the end, all I wanna say is FUCK YEAH, JANE! I really liked the Jane/Helen Burns tie in as well.
