The Scarlet Letter
by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Hawthorne has written a lovely historical novel of the puritans and all of their hypocrisy. He has a created a wonderful plot but focuses too much on very small details which takes away from the story. I think the novel would be better if Hawthorne spoke of the affair as it was happening, not starting the novel nine months later when Hester has given birth to Pearl. I also think that the story should have included more of Pearl and her actions and thoughts growing up not knowing her father. I think Pearl should have her own novel because of her complex and interesting characteristics.
*ENDING SPOILER*
As far as the ending, I am pleased with what Chillingworth does with his fortune. Pearl is considered a devil child and Chillingworth is a worker and descendant of the devil, so it was as if passing the fortune down the "family line".
Yes, at times the novel was hard to understand because of the heavy vocabulary and descriptors, but I can say that I liked this classic for the most part.
