the unfortunate timing of when i read this caused me to like it less: my english teacher had us read this directly after reading Brave New World. while i understand why these are paired together so often, to me it eventually felt like i was reading the same book. the beats are the same, some of the ideas are almost exactly the same, the plot twists operated in the same way and even the notion of an unsatisfying ending was the same. 1984 is undoubtedly fascinating and very well written--the use of language is very clever, there's lots of subtle humor throughout, and the pacing is pretty good. but after Brave New World, it just felt like more of the same.
