This was sweeping, complex, and full of heart. So much is happening to various characters at different points in time, most of whom are children, that it keeps the story both broad and laser focused at the same time. These children, mostly insignificant to history, end up changing the course of mankind in unique ways. It has a lot to say about power imbalances, environmentalism, and the impact one person can have, for good or ill. This is a book with so many layers, it would be perfect for multiple rereads.
Graphic: Ableism, Animal cruelty, Animal death, Confinement, Death, Pandemic/Epidemic
Moderate: Child death, Homophobia, Sexism, Death of parent, War
