I enjoyed it and it made me kind of nostalgic because it reminded me of a lot of the novels I enjoyed reading as a young tween. This would have really knocked my socks off if I'd gotten to read it back then-- it was probably better than a lot of what I was reading. Also, I was fascinated by the history of oppressive women's fashions around that age and would have had an extra appreciation for all the foot-binding content. This is a book people of most ages would probably enjoy although it's probably not suitable for very young children. I really liked the character growth and female friendship.

I read it because it's a top ten finalist for One Book One Lincoln, but I feel kind of bad for it because there's no way it's gonna beat James lol
