Hello World: Being Human in the Age of Algorithms by Hannah Fry

3.0

2019, 3 stars: Fun & accessible, though maybe a little more surface level than I was hoping for.

September 2023: Re-read because of Taylor Behnke's Hopepunk Book Club I think my first review fundamentally misunderstands the purpose the book in a snooty and terrible way. So much has changed in so short a period of time, but the book remains relevant. I think this is a really useful primer and asks some big questions we, as a society, should all be asking ourselves. I think this book does a great job of presenting the problems while still giving the reader hope that we can come up with solutions. I do think there are a few places where that press towards optimism leaders her to gloss over some things. The ways she talks about crime, in particular, truly feels like someone who knows tech but did very cursory research into crime & its solutions. On the whole this is a worthwhile read.
