Felidae by Akif Pirinçci

5.0

I finished this book yesterday, and my brain is still going, "wow."

Felidae was a little hard to get into at first, and I wasn't sure if I'd like it, even though there was drama from only one chapter in. I had no idea that a murder mystery about cats could be serve as such an incredible piece of social commentary. Seriously, this is the kind of book that made me feel smarter for reading it, and that's not at all what I thought would happen when I started it.

Through what at first looks like a simple narrative, this book comments on animal rights, the effects religion can have on people, and complex personal relationships. It's Warriors on crack, and with a philosophy degree.

It should be noted that Felidae is most definitely not appropriate for kids or young teenagers, and, depending on the individual, could be disturbing to adult readers. If you love pet rats (as I do), there is one scene that could upset you. The gore descriptions do not shy away from extreme, and there is some sexual content.

But I do, overall, recommend this book to anyone who can handle a story that grips your emotions and scares you at times. Totally worth it.
