Salt: A World History
by Mark Kurlansky
Overall, this book took me FOREVER to get through; some portions are absolutely fascinating, while other portions made me struggle to keep interest.
It was obvious to me that extensive historical research had been done, and the novel was thoughtfully planned out. But, the book was difficult to get through. At times, the information also seemed somewhat unrelated to the topic (I suppose I'd rather be off-topic than completely bored by really in-depth looks into salt harvesting).
While I did learn a great deal, the book lacked humor and was sometimes rather dry. A fascinating look at a detailed subject, but not something I would recommend to the casual reader.
