First, that fact that a 500 page book reads like a 200 page book is impressive. The story flows so well and there are no parts that feel sluggish to get through or like unnecessary filler. Bree is a one-of-a-kind protagonist: headstrong and moral and she never feels like a bystander in her own story. Everything that unfolds happens because of how Bree specifically interacts with the world. The other characters add depth and are fleshed out in ways typically not seen in the first book of a series. They feel like people you know- people you have known, in fact. Bree has very strong emotions, particularly related to the people in her life, and very quickly in the course of the book, the reader feels the same way about those in Bree’s life. The way Ms Deonn folds the magic into the fabric of the story is so subtle and it really allows the heart of the issues to shine. On a reread, (and having read the following books) the foreshadowing is done so well and again, is very subtle. Nothing is obvious but the layers to which seemingly small details informs MUCH later actions is not only impressive but enjoyable. And it makes it easy to come back to the books with new eyes. However, nothing will ever compare to reading chapter 55 for the first time.
Graphic: Death, Grief, Injury/Injury detail, Classism
Moderate: Racism, Violence, Car accident
