The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives by Lola Shoneyin

5.0

Have you ever read a book because a friend recommended it and it turned out to be the ONE????

This book was the one when I read it!!!
Lola talks about the lifestyle of a typical illiterate Yoruba man and his wives.

It felt so good to read a book that portrayed my culture and history so well. It's like seeing reality move through words.

Lola did a fantastic job when she wrote this story.

The story follows Baba Segi who is married to 3 wives-Iya Segi Iya Tope and Iya Femi. Their household is blossoming with children and each wife knows her place and knows not to go against the first wife's words- Iya Segi.

But their peaceful home is put on trial and the relationship between the wives and their husbands is stretched thing when Baba Segi marries a graduate.

Lola moves between flashbacks and truthful conversations to show you the story of how young girls become mothers and wives most times against their own choices and how female education isn't truly wanted for girls.
