I had a hard time rating this book. Very early on, it was clear to me that I was not the target audience. I rarely enjoy "real world" contemporary, and I very rarely enjoy stories where the military is an integral part of the narrative. But I enjoyed the writing style, and I found it easy to feel for the characters so I carried on.
And damn, it made me feel things. Then it made me feel those things even more. At that point I had to pause reading because I wasn't ready to deal with it. It's fun, nostalgic, tense, hot, friendly, despairing, warm, sad, and compassionate. A book that evokes that level of emotion gets an extra star from me.
This is not a romance, but it's at times romantic. It's a story about reaching out and daring to try for a second chance at love. It's about choosing family and trying your best at creating a better life for them. The book starts with an impending sense of doom that colours my perception of every following interaction, but it's also easy to get lost in the moments where the characters just exist together. It's lovely how much of the relationships, both romantic and platonic, both good and hard, we get to see.
Later in the book, there's a stylistic choice that really drives the character development home. It's well done; skilled, devastating and beautiful. In fact, the entire book is well done and thought through. Even though I still maintain that it wasn't for me, for someone who likes this type of story, this will be a wonderful read.
