bosquedemel 's review for:
The Children of Men
by P.D. James
Exceeded my expectations. This was far more philosophical and introspective than I expected which was a pleasant surprise; the thoughts on good and evil, religion, politics, human nature were all so interesting that I honestly wished the book was longer. James' writing is stellar and incisive. I'm not surprised James mostly wrote crime stories; I feel like the depth in the characters' psychology in this book is definitely a sign of that genre experience. And the ambiguous, open ending is perfectly in line with the sense of dread and unease that permeates the book.
Definitely a haunting, highly suspenseful tale, something it shares with CuarĂ³n's adaptation. The latter is a very successful adaptation, in my opinion, elevating some elements in James' book as a way of crafting something more cinematic and explosive. It's a good example of how the same general story can be shown in two different mediums, maximising the pros and advantages of each.
