pingpingmyping 's review for:
Animal
by Lisa Taddeo
I'm writing this review knowing that I have never written a review for a book before. I just finished this book today and I don't think I can give it a rating.
It goes without saying, but this book is clearly not for everyone. I am almost sure that this book wasn't for me.
Before I continue, I need you to know that the writing in this book is phenomenal. Upon reading other reviews taht other have written here and online, I can also say that the writing made me want to find out more. I was not surprised that the book took the direction that it did, however I had a strange feeling when the book was over.
I did not enjoy this book. I think that Taddeo is a wonderful writer in that she can write such a depraved character. But this book is not enjoyable. When I finished, I didn't feel any sense of gratification that it was over. The book itself had washed over me in the matter of the hours that it took me to read it.
Someone online had recommended this book to me not long ago. I ordered it from the library knowing that the story revolved around a disturbed woman named Joan who had witnessed the man whom she had an affair with, kill himself in front of her.
This is not an enjoyable journey, the book is sad but not in the way that would make you cry, but fill you with disgust over different characters' actions. Taddeo writes these characters like they are real people. The ending of the novel did not leave me wanting more, but I felt like I needed to speak to the characters in real life, like I needed to know more but from their point of view.
It is because of this that I cannot rate this book accurately. Usually, when you finish a book or a film, a lot of people ask you if you enjoyed what you have read or watched, but as I've said before it's almost impossible for me to say that this book is enjoyable. Nohing in this book brought me happiness but it was not like I wanted it to at the end but I just felt uneasy when I had finished it.
This book is intense, and will likely be on your mind well beyond reading the final page.
