Lady Chatterley's Lover by D.H. Lawrence

I can always tell when it's time to put a book down when I feel dread at the idea of reading it.

The beginning of this book was perhaps my favourite classic. I loved the idea of de-centering the mind and prioritising other ways of knowing. I loved the idea of a woman's sensual awakening.

But somehow, somewhere the book turns. And the author's views become more and more conservative. He states over and over again that a "good" woman is submissive. Passive, even. That sexual pleasure for a woman comes from, not being an equal participant, but in abandoning her autonomy and giving herself over fully.

And as a result, Constance never feels like a fully fleshed out character. She's only ever defined in relationship to the men around her: becoming the rebel around Clifford, and passive around Mellors.
