Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers
2.0
This book was a big letdown for me. The romance was heavily on the back burner and there were no fireworks or even a spark between Yuki and Grace for me. I can see how this is an adult book because Grace is almost 30 and a lot of the book is about career struggles but the writing itself read more YA-ish. There are also a lot of words and phrases that are repeated in this book to the point that it gets a tad bit annoying, like every time Yuki is described it mentions how she smells of sea salt. Like, I get it the first time, maybe a nice reminder the second time, but the fifth time I'm just kinda over it.
I do think this book had important commentary on how women of color are treated in the academic setting and workplace. Grace has a Ph.D. in astronomy and has to constantly fight to show her worth as a queer black woman which I felt was a very emotional and strong part of the story.
Overall, 2.25 stars.
