Man, this novel is a blast. This book, at its core, is Harry Potter set in a school of assassins. The characters are for the most part well-drawn (there are a couple of Snape/Malfoy analogues who I wish had more depth), the plot is gripping (who doesn’t love a good revenge story?), and the action scenes freaking rip.
My only real gripe is that the prose gets a bit florid at points, especially during the worldbuilding early on, and some of the flashback scenes are more dry than the present-day storyline, but overall, this is a bloody, violent, very dark adult fantasy novel, and it’s a non-stop blast pretty much start to finish.
