One of the most remarkable things about this book is the overlapping but separate narratives. Gemma and Lyra's stories physically overlap for a limited amount of time, which is part of what makes this work so well. As I was reading, I was waiting for their stories to meet, and each time they did I was left both satisfied and more curious. They each have answers for the other, but not enough to close out the narrative, which again, is one of the most remarkable things about this book.
I read Lyra's story first, but I would be interested to explore how it reads with Gemma's story first. Gemma seems to have more of the answers, but Lyra provides more of the context, which I think is a fascinating away to look at a book that has multiple POVs.
The plot both surprised me (because I misread the synopsis, lol) and was a hair predictable, but still enjoyable. Personally I preferred Lyra's story because it was weird and first put the reader in the fish-out-of-water position, and then put Lyra in that same position. Gemma's story starts a little more mainstream than I prefer my speculative fiction, but she grew on me as I continued reading and as she got deeper into the weird.
This story is set in Florida, which is both a thing I didn't know when I picked up the book and a thing that would have gotten me to pick up the book faster. I love it when fiction is set in my state.
