Unfortunately, there were a lot of things I didn’t like about this book than the opposite. BUT the end made up for it.
Only a handful of characters acted like they had some sense for their age. This felt very college romance (and I love college romances) but that’s not a compliment here considering the characters are in their late 20s/early 30s (something I kept having to remind myself). The last 20% redeemed the book thankfully, but what I disliked the most was that the main character was too passive for me, and I would’ve liked to see her thought process when she finally decided to confront her mom specifically.
As much as I loved Rome to bits (he was my favorite person), I felt like this story should've been strictly from Janelle's POV because it took her almost the entire book to put her foot down. And a few moments where she had it hard or came to some epiphany, we'd been in Rome's head... I want to be in HER head! The thing was, Rome already got it together, we didn't really need his POV. Also, there were simply too many sex scenes lol. I get it, they had great sex, but it took up the space that other parts of the plot should've gotten.
Despite that, there were moments of laughter and amusement, and I really enjoyed the friend dynamic to an extent. What kept me in the story was my curiosity for Janelle’s growth and while we saw a good portion, I wished we could've at least been in that moment with her (during and after) when she decided she had enough.
