This book sucked to read. If you don’t like ‘boring classics’ you will absolutely hate this. I had to read it for a course and I’ve never struggled so much to get through a book.
There are some redeeming elements in the book. I think it will be interesting to analyse. It gives an interesting perspective on the South after the American Civil War from a southern perspective but not like an apologetic/lost cause perspective.
There is the aspect that since the book is so confusing and labyrinthine that it’s almost like a puzzle that you have to solve to find out what’s going one. However, the overall picture you piece together isn’t that interesting and there isn’t really any engaging or likeable characters. Also warning for the n-word every other page.
In all, I could maybe understand why someone would like this book, but I wouldn’t take any further book recommendations from them. Read this or don’t, but just know that if you don’t like the first 20 pages, you won’t like the rest of the book.
