The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang
3.0
It was ok, I’d give it a 2.5 if I could give half stars on this app. I would say this is more metal health focused than a romance. I think if I prepared myself for a more emotional, deep book, I may have enjoyed it more. This book does a great job of showing a glimpse into the life of people struggling with mental health, health problems, life’s pressures, and what it is like for someone on the spectrum. I went into this expecting another heartfelt romance but really did not get that. This was heartfelt and happy at times but I found myself frustrated and sad for most of the book. Honestly, it just felt like there was too much going on and each issue didn’t get the attention it deserved.
*Not really spoilers but maybe some vague ones?
I had super high expectations for Quans book because he is such a big and happy part of each of the other books. This just sort of fell flat for me. It felt like he as a character changed so much and it felt like reading about a completely different character. I loved the idea of him overcoming his diagnosis and the character development there. He was still as sweet and understanding and he was in the other books but we really don’t get much deeper into him than that.
For Anna, she had a lot to overcome. I think the author did a great job at representing masking and getting a diagnosis as an adult. However, it all just felt like too much was pushed together in 330ish pages. Her own personal struggles along with her family as a whole but especially her sister and Julien. On top of that the stuff with her dad.
Again, I think a lot of what I didn’t like about this book is it didn’t meet my expectations and I just did not expect this direction when I picked it up.
