Not Quite a Husband
by Sherry Thomas
August 2024:
I really love this book, though it's problematic at times and definitely not going to be for everyone. Sherry Thomas is such a good writer, though, especially for those of us who are suckers for Angst with a capital A. The way she interweaves the hero and heroine's backstory into the narrative is so well done, their character development is great for such a relatively brief novel, and the setting in colonial India in the late 1890s is genuinely evocative. 4.5 stars
October 2015:
The tension and love/hate feelings between the two main characters during the first part of the book was so good. I got really invested in them finding happiness together again, as the story of their sad, brief marriage unfolded. I liked the setting in Victorian-era India, and the adventure of them getting caught up in the Swat Valley uprising of 1897. It was also a bit of a novelty in a historical romance to have a heroine with a profession, in this case as a surgeon. A real page-turner -- evocative, romantic, and exciting.
