The Book of You
by Claire Kendal
I read a lot of psychological thrillers but this one seemed to get under my skin from the first page. Very cleverly written in the first and third person, I found it difficult to put down and was instantly back in Clarissa's world as soon as I picked it up again.
It's also about the way women are judged by society, by the press (witness the way a victim is described in the newspaper, "Party girl Jane Smith was last seen..."); by the judiciary (witness the way the victim is treated during the court case); and finally the way we judge ourselves, letting politeness and good manners override a gut instinct to run.
Excellent thriller, will definitely read Claire Kendal's next book as soon as it's published, she says, hopefully...!
