The Monk by Matthew Lewis
4.0
I found The Monk to be gripping in some places, but I feel like it lost momentum in some key parts.
For example, I felt as though the first half of the story focused primarily on Agnes and the marquis, and although that story is interesting, I feel it took far too long for the stories to converge in any meaningful way.
The writing style was interesting, I found it easy to follow when I was paying attention, despite not being familiar with Gothic Fiction. It was a dense read.
The overall story was very entertaining. I liked Ambrosio's slow descent into worse and worse crimes, and the end really brings it all together well for a satisfying conclusion.
I'm not so bothered by the controversies surrounding this book, and I found the themes of religious figures' animosity towards their own sins to be relevant still in the modern era. I love a good defamatory Christian book. The incest was unnecessary though
