Pet Sematary by Stephen King
5.0

King’s greatest horror story. It’s a testament to how well written it is that the, at first glance, outwardly silly nature of the book’s third act reads as merely the obvious next steps that each character would take and the natural results of their actions, which is where literally every adaptation of this story has failed.

And that third act wouldn’t hold up without the thoughtful, perfectly measured first two, which hold up a metaphor begging to be strained to breaking points by lesser writers. It’s not hard to see why King himself once put the manuscript in the drawer without ever wanting to touch it again, as it remains, even 41 years later, his most upsetting work.
