This was a challenging read, following Lauren through a dystopian landscape that is not all that far fetched. The constant death, abuse, and assault that all of the characters are witness and victim to throughout the entire story require reflection with current world events and our places within them - upholding them. The hope comes in from the slow but steady growth of communityaround Lauren, something we can bring with us into today with Mutual aid. The book was a great read, kind of a prelude to Afro-Futurism. I don't think I will read it again.
