The Wonder Engine
by T. Kingfisher
I'm not sure how to rate this book.
The problem is that I absolutely enjoyed the dynamics between the characters and I enjoyed the plot but there were three rather large things I DIDN'T enjoy
- Brenner dying -- so I called that the demon was in someone, I just didn't think they'd kill him off. To me the book had been about the relationship between the three of the them and the friendships forged, Brenner DIDN'T need a redemption arc, so what the fuck was he doing dying??
- The too brief riding off into the sunset -- the rest of Caliban/Slate's relationship had built so slowly, I literally had to have a pause and a flap about when they kissed, and then, it's shat on, we get lots of quick realisations without the plot and they waltz off into the proverbial sunset??? Their relationship had worked best when it was sprinkled amongst the plot
- The 'second machine' and brother thingy, I might have been distracted by the Brenner situation but I just kinda got a bit confused on what WAS happening there.
So. I don't know, I fucking loved this book... right until the end.
