Glitterland by Alexis Hall

I wasn't expecting to like this book. But I did! I LOVED it ...

This was one of the best books of the year for me. It is unexpectedly good and brilliantly written. I loved pretty much everything about it -- strong characterization, powerful and emotionally engaging, funny ... the pacing is perfect and didn't drag. I literally fell in love with Ash ("babes") and Darian ("the glitter pirate") in this unique and endearing little romp. I didn't want it to end ... ever ... it was so good!

I loved the setting, the regional/class differences, and the Essex accent. ... I don't know much about mental illness but thought it was well portrayed and added an interesting dimension and complexity to the story. I'm not sure if this is intended to be a series but I would read Glitterland #2 without hesitation. There is a free supplement available from the Riptide publisher's website that I devoured promptly after finishing this book. I will definitely read more books by this author ...

I cannot say enough about this book and that is why it gets a rare, much-deserved 5 star rating.
