Three Comrades by Erich Maria Remarque
5.0

After almost a decade of hearing my grandpa talk about this book, I finally gave it a read. He always referenced Herr Zalewski’s “moderation is key” motto followed by the fact that he drank himself to death. The beginning of the book had lots of similar humor framed by Robby’s simple life, simple workshop, and early, light love for Pat. Of course, this didn’t last long and the latter half of the book describes 1928 Germany with heart-wrenching detail. My grandpa grew up in the USSR and for a while read only the “boy scout stories” young boys were given to read. This book was his first gulp of freedom and escape from communism, inspiring him to continue a pursuit of freedom with book after book, and eventually by bringing his family to America. This book means so much to me and affected me profoundly, please do read it!
