Girl About Time by Kerstin Gier
3.0

I'm kinda sad about this one, as the translation in the edition I read (the Chicken House paperback titled 'Girl About Time' rather than 'Ruby Red') was just obviously bad in places. Especially towards the beginning there was a ton of stilted dialogue and a whole lot of telling rather than showing. What's even more sad is that Chicken House stopped translating with the first in the series, so if I want to keep reading I have to switch to a different translation in which some of the characters have completely different names *sigh*

That being said, the plot was fast paced and intriguing. Although the time travel elements were full of logical holes, if you suspended your disbelief for a bit then it was still a very fun ride. The framing elements were well done and I enjoyed starting to piece together the mystery behind Gwen's family and special talents. I may go back to this series one day, as the plot and characters were fun enough to make me want to know what happens next, but I suspect I'd be best to leave it for some time and then start again completely with the Henry Holt/Macmillan translations *double sigh*
