On Becoming a Person by Carl R. Rogers
3.0
I wanted to like this more than I did. His core insights were revolutionary and are enduringly influential. But this book often fluffs up those simple insights at exhaustive and exhausting length with academic-ese and psychobabble. The book ends up feeling much longer than it needs to be.
This book also hasn't aged well. It seems to define the individual's psychological state as an almost entirely internal matter, never addressing with any care the effects of trauma or social factors, such as racism, poverty, sexism, etc.
