Lolita
by Vladimir Nabokov
Ugh. That was beyond fucked up... If you think there was something romantic about this book you have a defective brain. I wanted to give it five stars for the beautiful airy prose but I also wanted to throw the book into the trash. Similar to The Tunnel by Sabato but infinity times more disturbing.
Edit: Yeah, it broke me. On second thought it's definitely five stars. But never again. It was like staring into the abyss but I was unable to look away.
Edit 2: After brewing in my head for several days after finishing it, I'm gonna have to say it's easily one of the best books I've read all year despite, and because of, the fact that is was extremely disturbing and hard to read. The truths it contains are raw and visceral and combined with the melodious prose it's unforgettable. The people who complain about the book being about a guy in his mid 30's driving around repeatedly sexually assaulting a 12 year old and asking to have it taken off of "best book" lists are doing a surface level reading and are missing the point, just like those that get angry about Heart of Darkness. If we can't even talk about problems they don't magically go away. They fester and grow.
