internetnomads 's review for:
Perdido Street Station
by China MiƩville
This was my first steampunk genre experience. I didn't even understand the meaning behind the concepts until I was a third of the way into the book, and that's because my husband explained them to me. So call me a little dense here.
If you come to this book completely cold, like I did, you will be a little lost. I would've found the first 50 pages a lot easier if I'd been able to accept the conceits the author expects you to grok on page 1. It's a little far outside of reality for me, but the plot was excellent, and there was really no guessing the end of the novel.
Unfortunately, the ending just peters out. I thought it needed to be more dramatic, given the amount of time and concentration it takes to get there.
