Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto

3.0

a great exploration of grief and relationship bonds.

but, in kitchen, why do the characters constantly have to misgender eriko and play it out like a little joke or something to be constantly reminded of for some spontaneous reason. it does seem to come from a great place at heart that yoshimoto included trans women and that those characters were the loveliest people in the story, but why was the rest like that. while the main and the guy's relationship was nice, hearing them joke about eriko's identity as a bonding moment took me out of the wholesome moment and had me rolling my eyes every so often.

liked moonlight shadows much better. it felt like a little bedtime story with its somewhat magical nature.
