The Caretakers
by Eliza Maxwell
There were some really good (and some not-so-good) parts of this book, some of which are hard to explain without giving spoilers. Suffice it to say that there are two different timelines at play here, both involving pairs of sisters: one set younger, one much older. Their stories converge when one of the younger sisters needs to hide from the press after she made a film that helped get what she believes is an innocent man's murder sentence overturned, but the man kills again and releases a statement to the press that implicates her.
Of the two sets of sisters, I found the storyline involving the older sisters (which was more Gothic and atmospheric, rife with twists and revelations) to be much more engaging, while the drama (and, well, the entire storyline) between the two younger sisters felt forced and improbable. I hated almost everything about their storyline and often felt like the book was written by two authors with very different skillsets, and one of them was severely lagging behind the other (*cough* Liv Constantine *cough*).
The inconsistencies and unbelievability of the latter storyline really harmed the book, but I would be interested in reading the author again because the things that were done well were done very well.
A very disappointed 2 out of 5 stars.
