American Sutra: A Story of Faith and Freedom in the Second World War by Duncan Ryuken Williams

challenging slow-paced

5.0

5 stars simply because this book is one of a kind. Absolutely apalling to me to learn just how despised japanese buddhism was pre and post WWII, when all it seems like now that buddhism or buddhist aethestics are being co-opted by white spirituals who aren't engaging with buddhist communities respectfully. Nor understand the history of american buddhism.

Anyways, wonderful book that truly opened my perspective on japanese incarceration. I had never heard of the incarceration through the eyes of JA buddhists, and had only heard the history thru aetheist and christian sources. Very throurough and rich in detail, due to the seventeen years it took for williams to research and then write.

What does religious freedom look like in america? Who is free in america?
