It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover

4.0

Great for a beginner trying to get into reading... I don't know how to put it into words.. this was an experience I'll never forget. Being my first fiction this is close to my heart doesn't matter what the critics say.

It is an easy and quick read and will keep you engaged. BUT CAN BE TRIGGERING... if you've been in an abusive relationship/, I do not recommend reading this.

I am no writer or a seriously obsessive reader and this was my first fictional novel (romance though not really romance) but I predicted almost every second twist while reading it, BUT my interest was still peaked. A girl with, traumatic childhood, moves to a new city, starts her own business, meets a guy, falls in love, the past shows up, past versus present...I mean it's basic alright.
So the story is engaging, and you might get lost in it. It honestly depends on age groups as well. If you're above 20, you might find too many issues triggering you... below 20, we are still learning about life...
Lily and Ryle both are red flags...because this book is from Lily's pov, she gets the easy pass but had a lot of issues.

Book trigger warnings: Domestic abuse, Death of a family member, sexual assault, attempted rape, PTSD

spoilers!!!--------

Ryle showed red flags as soon as he entered the story but along with Lily, I gotta admit I fell in love with him ( yes I got a thing for toxic men and yes I'm working on it ) and I realized I was forgiving him just like Lily. The first time, the second time, and again. I was fighting against my morals but the love blinded me and I realized a lot about my issues and thanks for that, the reality check.
The problem was communication. Lily, you shouldn't be with someone if you've not over someone! That's the rule. They could've communicated beforehand about Atlas and the journals. I think Ryle wasn't such an ass that he wouldn't understand the young love between Lily and Atlas. Being a possessive guy, he was expected to get angry.

BUT AGAIN, Lily tells him about Atlas THE FIRST NIGHT they met, she gets slapped because she laughed which could easily be anybody's response to such a sweet light moment, Atlas was a beautiful piece from her traumatic childhood, she stood up for Ryle in front of Alyssa and Atlas and she did things to try and save the relationship.. he read the journal that was written but the young Lily who was at that time in love w the guy the journal was supposed to be so intense... "he's everywhere"...even then she didn't deserve to get assaulted like that, nobody does.
Honestly, I understood Ryle's anger issues at first. He did a traumatic childhood but Baby you don't assault someone???? That's just fucked up and there's no moving on from that. The bite on the collarbone tattoo still gives me chills and boy was I scared. I cried reading that part because he got so scary, and I'm a toughie, I don't cry so damn easily!!
Atlas was a sweetheart from beginning to end... I enjoyed every second of him BUT HE WAS 18 AND SHR WAS 16, how can you do that? CoHo? Not to ruin the entire book for myself, I tried hard to ignore that, pretending she was 17 so I can finish the book...
Atlas and Lily's love felt pure, just like your first love is expected, beautiful, and painful...but I was so deep into Lily and Ryle's story that when it went south, so did my heart in my ribcage and I just couldn't process whatever the fuckery was happening.
The best in the story is Lily and Alyssa's friendship and oh Marshall, the real king.

We saw Ryle suffer. He wasn't doing any better than Lily though that's his fault, his suffering broke my heart too. Because only if they acted maturely and tried working on their issues, they both would've ended as a happy family.
Lily was brave to end the cycle. It was a shocker although not so much because the story is so predictable. The ending could've been a lil gentler on Ryle. And That is why I don't feel like reading the second book at all.
To sum up, all the characters can use therapy.

It's a 4 ⭐ because I connected with it and I know how problematic that is but it contained real-life problems. As my first fiction, my experience was good. I laughed, cried, questioned myself, fell in love, and regretted it, but overall, learned a few things about myself. Brave and bold, realistic and beautiful.

I've seen people get really mad over Lily and Ryle and Lily's mom over the abuse thing but when you've been through or seen something like that in real life, you understand that it's exactly how reality is. Easier said than done, leaving a loved one is not a joke doesn't matter how they treat you. It also depends a lot on the person and their past experiences.
