Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto
3.0
I needed something light and fluffy after my last read and this was it.
I enjoyed it and I loved learning about the culture of the author’s background. It was so funny and I will definitely be reading the sequel.
However, I struggle with rating because there was so much going on in this book that I also wasn’t sure about it.
Was it a thriller? Ehh. No, but there was a murder.
Was it romance? Yes. The theme of romance is there throughout. And not just romance but the love story between the daughter, mother and her aunts was so special and enriching.
But the murder. It just felt so weird, out of place, and didn’t work for me. I felt like the author was trying to have her own fresh spin on the cozy mystery genre and it just took away from the richness of the rest of the story.
Had this just been a story about a girl who struggled choosing between committing to her family or the love of her life, that would have been enough. That’s the story I wanted to focus on. The dead body took away from the whole experience for me.
Which is odd for me to say since I read so many thrillers and horror novels.
Overall though, a fun book!
