I was really excited to read this book as I remember it being fairly popular when it first came out, and I've picked up some of the other books in the series at various book sales in preparation for when I actually sat down and read it. Sadly, this was a lot more "Harlequin Romance" than I was led to believe it would be, and that's not really my type of book. The writing itself isn't that great either. I cringed particularly hard at this passage:

Delaroche strode on bandy legs to the door, clapped his hands together and bellowed, "Prepare the interrogation chamber!"

"The regular interrogation chamber, sir?" one guard ventured, keeping well on the other side of the stone door frame.

"Oh no." Delaroche unleashed another of his humorless laughs. "Take him to the extra-special interrogation chamber!"

I can just see this in cartoon form, music swelling and a quick close up, ugh.

That being said, the plot itself was interesting enough to keep me going and I genuinely liked some of the characters. I may read some of the other books...I haven't decided yet. The fact that it's kind of an open ending always gets me hooked, whether I want to be or not. Definitely more of a fluffy beach-read than the kind of books I'm interested in, but there's nothing wrong with a little harmless light reading every now and then. Other than the dangers of excessive eye rolling.
