Cherry on Top by Georgia Beers

3/5 stars

I am a big fan of Georgia Beers’ books, so I was very excited when I saw this new release. You always know that you are going to get an enjoyable, easy to read and loveable story by Beers, and this one was really no different. At its heart, this was a more straightforward girl meets girl story. It felt refreshingly stripped back to what I love about romance, with the awkward meetings to the first date and getting to know each other stages. There was a lot of great chemistry between Cherry and Ellis, which made them a great pair to explore..

While I think this was a really enjoyable book overall with great romance and side characters, I have more complex feelings about the side stories and conflict of the book. While the characters’ relationships were great to explore, their jobs, motivations and overall the conflict between them felt much more surface level. Like Ellis wanting to be a serious journalist was mentioned and touched on in her side job (which was barely mentioned by the way), but it did feel like it was just there to set up the conflict rather than as well developed in its own right. I think Cherry’s career, motivations and friendships were more developed, but even still the conflict really could be seen from miles away. And talking about the conflict, I think it’s dealt with in a very quick and ‘under-the-rug’ kind of way. It’s like all the pieces for a greasy story were there, but it felt a bit rushed towards the end.
