My Year of Rest and Relaxation
by Ottessa Moshfegh
super odd read... i almost didn't finish it but decided to spam the remaining 50% in a day, the protagonist is so unlikeable and annoying and honestly it got so repetitive like yea i get that you're taking another ambien but like how does this move the story along you've already had a thousand.... and her friendship with reva is genuinely annoying and toxic, i had genuine disdain for every single character (haha except dr tuttle she was funny)
also - felt like so much emphasis is placed on the protagonist's conventional beauty to glorify and romanticise her "laziness" because if she wasn't stick skinny, her lethargy and laziness would be phrased in a different light, and it just felt so... brother eurgh
i gave it an extra star for the shock factor - it's crazy that this girlie did this, besides her absolutely disgusting personality, it does sound super nice to sleep for a year and emerge a new person. the novel felt kind of absurdist, with miss girl as a female meursault with how ridiculous the whole thing is.
