Compulsion
by Martina Boone
This is one of those reviews where I try to be coherent and not just gush because I just loved it so much. I got to know Martina Boone well before Compulsion was released. Martina used her blog and social media to promote her book and connect with readers and I was instantly drawn to Martina’s personality and her book description. It’s always tough when you get to know an author first before even reading one of their books, because what if you end up not liking their books at all?! Awkward. I was a little scared to read this book and afraid it couldn’t live up to all the hype I had built up in my mind for it; however, Compulsion did not disappoint at all. In fact, Compulsion was even better than I could have dreamed and it captured that special place in my heart most books fail too. Compulsion is without a doubt one of the best books I’ve read all year, and let me tell you why it was just so perfect for me!
A great cast of characters, pitch perfect writing, plot that moves at just the right pace, swoon worthy romance, diversity and fantasy elements like nothing I’d read before, plus deep rooted topics of loss and compulsion all combined to make a gripping novel I couldn’t put down. There was a lot of suspense in this book because I had no idea where a lot of it was going to go. Kind of like this review, where do I start, there is some much I want to say and so much I loved.
The cast of characters are all so unique and well rounded. Barrie Watson is dealing with a lot in her young life. Her mom, Lula, has just died and surrogate father like figure, Mark, is dying. Mark is one of my favorite, unique parts of this story. He brings so much unexpected advice and uniqueness that I was just so taken with him. With all this happening there is only one solution for Barrie, she is being sent to live with her mom’s sister Pru. Pru thought her sister Lula died years ago so it’s a shock when she finds out she didn’t and has a grown daughter who now needs a guardian. The overall theme and idea of loss, death and living life without regrets is represented so well throughout this entire novel. These themes move me to smiles and tears at different times and Martina captures these realistic themes so well in a novel with fantasy.
Barrie meets Eight soon after she arrives on Watson Island and instantly we learn there is something there but what exactly?! Plus, as I got to know more about Eight I was quickly finding him swoon worthy. He was sweet, sexy and there for Eight through all the changes she is going through. Eight isn’t perfect but he sure does his best to be there and make Barrie feel safe while she begins to experience the extremely strange happenings of Watson Island.
The fantasy elements are so unique and Martina slowly builds them into story. She uses suspense and mysteries to build around the fantasy and together it creates this totally engrossing tale. While we learn a lot and do get answers to several central mysteries by the end of the story, there are still plenty of fantasy elements and mysteries left unsolved for the next two books to explore. I know I will be rereading this book again and can’t wait to read book 2 Persuasion the minute it’s released.
