Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

Wonderful. Exquisitely written, and deserving of all the accolades and praise it has received. I am glad I finally got around to reading this. Deep, developed and flawed characters, historical fiction, an insight into Southern white perspectives on slavery, the Civil War, and reconstruction that could never be fully captured in a history book. Rich, nuanced, textured, and a strong heroine with her own hamartia. I have to admit that like Scarlett, I refuse to accept the ending of this book. It's realistic but not my favorite! I will forever imagine Scarlett becoming wiser, kinder, and going back into the fray and ultimately recapturing the heart and passion of Captain Butler!
