Paladin's Hope by T. Kingfisher
4.0
Probably closer to 3.5*s, but I am rounding up to 4*s on the merit of the series as a whole.

Although this is an enjoyable book is the series, some aspects of it severely tried my patience:
- The stupid obstacle course was incredibly boring and irrelevant to the plot. Instead of creating interest/suspense, it almost put me to sleep with all the tedious logistics and seemingly endless repetitions of practically identical scenes and situations.
- The speed of the romantic development. Either the timeline seemed wrong, or the moments the author had chosen to show were not the relevant ones to the progression of the relationship. Whatever the cause, the "love" realizations felt delusional rather than natural and earned. I was looking forward to seeing that relationship grow into love, so seeing it so rushed and practically skipped over was disappointing.
- There are hints of larger political and social developments, and I wanted to learn more about them, but the book is focused elsewhere. It felt like this story is a distraction tactic, and not a particularly successful one.
However, even having said all that, I still like this world and I loved these characters both individually and together (eventually), and I really enjoyed all the auxiliary relationships being formed throughout this series.
