It's a bit slow in the beginning, the charcters feels like caricatures in the first few chapters aswell.
However the longer you get into the book the more you get to know and feel for the characters. With that said It never feels like any of them have any "real" depth, even though you can tell the author tries to make them complex and multifaceted.
