Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood

funny lighthearted medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? No
  • Loveable characters? Yes
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

3.0

Ali Hazelwood has become a bit of an inside joke in my reader friend group, so I went into this expecting it to be horribly cheesey and not great.

And thats exactly what it was. Very cheesey. Too many mentions of Star Wars. A little too down your throat with the feminism and women in stem. Ali's..... interests... in men clearly coming through her writing on how she chose to write Levi. A little bit too much Marie Curie

And yet, all the other reviews say they loved the Love Hypothesis and thought this was terrible in comparison and I'm going to state my unpopular opinion.... this was better. SUE ME!

Mild spoilers for both, but the first one was terrible. Their reason for fake dating made no sense, all their forced proximity (often brought on by her weird creepy best friend) was so cringe and unrealistic for a student/teacher pair, we knew NOTHING about the main guy Adam (he's apparently an evolutionary biologist?), and its obviously just Reylo fanfic.

This book, while not amazing, when you get through all the cringe and cheese, the core plot was actually 10x better. Main girl Bee and Levi have a missunderstanding, but it makes total sense why Bee would think Levi hated her with the way he acted, like that I could believe. And I could also believe why she'd reject him later on, given her past. We know more about Levi than we ever did Adam, and the cast of side characters was way less annoying and stereotypical than in LH (although Kaylee and Ricio were like stereotype to the max, it got to be a bit too much).

Overall, idk!!!! it was fun! I guess!
