And Now She's Gone by Rachel Howzell Hall

3.0

There’s something about this book that I don’t entirely love and I can’t quite put my finger on what it is. On the one hand, this story pulls you along and has you quickly turning pages. On the other hand, it also feels like it could’ve been edited down A LOT.

Hall has a style of writing that I sometimes find jarring. Her dialogue doesn’t always work for me and I had a hard time telling which phrases in italics were the main character’s thoughts versus her text messages versus things she actually said out loud. All of this just takes my focus off the story and gets me re-reading passages that I really feel shouldn’t warrant it.

As for the story? It takes awhile to warm up and I found some Grayson’s characterizations to be a contradiction. About halfway through though, I knew I needed to see the outcome of the story. The plot gets convoluted and I personally feel there were threads that could’ve been left out but it resolves itself in a mostly satisfying way.

Trigger warning for lots of discussion of domestic violence and also other general violence. It’s fairly graphic so be forewarned if that bothers you.
